Job Description: Position Purpose summary: The Thrift Store Supervisor ensures that the New Liskeard Thrift Store is organized, neat and provides service to customers. In addition, they contribute to the stores success by assisting the Director of Community and Family Services in executing store operations. Accountabilities: Operations
  • Assist in executing store operations.
  • Determine and maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Responsible for assisting and supervising a team of employees and volunteers to ensure standards in sales, customer service, merchandizing, marketing, and public relations are achieved.
  • Serve the customers in a courteous and efficient manner by listening to and addressing customer concerns, suggestions and complaints and discussing with the Director Community and Family Services as needed.
  • Ensure accuracy in the completion of all customer transactions.
  • Supervise as well as participate in sorting and tagging merchandise, unloading donations, stocking shelves, and performing cash transactions.
  • Prepare sales summaries when required; contribute to meeting store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
  • Inventory control: retrieve, sort, price, and discard or recycle any stale or un-saleable items on an ongoing basis; seek to protect the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring.
  • Assist with the store layout plans to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays, advising of any recommendations for new racks, shelving, and signage.
  • Oversee and participate in ensuring the maintenance and cleanliness of the store is up to standard policy including practicing “Tidy Maintenance.”
Supervision
  • In consultation with the Director of Community and Family Services, prepare employee/volunteer work schedules; plan coverage for vacation/sick days.
  • May participate in the recruitment of staff and volunteers.
  • Provide training for new and existing employees and volunteers as requested.
Communications
  • Communicate any maintenance issues in a timely manner.
  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Community and Family Services to ensure consistent adherence to Ministry Unit Store Policies/Promotions and for support as needed.
  • May submit requests regarding in-store operational needs and supplies, as necessary.
Health & Safety
  • Assist in the orientation of new employees and volunteers regarding health and safety procedures, Ministry Unit Store Policies/Procedures, etc.
  • Responsible to report any serious health and safety infractions or problems in accordance with policies.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Responsible to ensure that employees and volunteers comply with all safety procedures and by monitoring Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties as assigned. Assist with the materials management of donations/product flow in the thrift store. Working Conditions:
  • This is a permanent, full-time position based upon 35 hours per week.
  • Shifts will include Saturdays and the occasional weekday, as per operational requirement.
  • The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
Normal Hours of Work: as per operational requirements, generally regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break as necessary. The schedule will include Saturdays as per operational requirement. The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Armys Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct. Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • Completion of a Community College diploma or equivalent in a related field of study.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
  • Have a minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including retail, marketing, and supervisory experience.
  • Cash handling experience is required.
  • Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures i.e., bank deposits, summary reports, etc.
  • Basic math skills are required to calculate discounts and percentages.
  • Product brand awareness would be an asset.
  • Experience working in a computerized environment.

  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills (written/oral).
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.20 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
