Job Description: ACCOUNTABILITIES: Commercial Kitchen Operations
  • Guided by Food Safe practices and SA policies, prepare daily meals for guests utilizing resources and donations in a way that extends their potential reach.
  • Organize tasks according to priority, ensuring the continuous operation of the kitchen, washing dishes throughout the day.
  • Work with and empower volunteers, in a positive and respectful manner, to support the daily kitchen operations. Request volunteer support and give direction for: making soup; making sandwiches; mixing salad; preparing desserts; washing dishes; cleaning and sanitizing workstations; serving breakfast; processing food such as carrots, potatoes, ground beef, turkey, etc; rolling cutlery.
  • Following Food Safe, Foodbank Accreditation, and TSA standards, record and track all necessary aspects of food handling i.e. hot food temperature logs, fridge/freezer temperature logs, cooling logs, etc.
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness according to Interior Health inspection standards.
  • Communicate with supervisor, Community Ministries Director, regarding supply levels and what is necessary to purchase for continuous operation.
  • Process incoming perishable food donations according to Food Safe standards, utilizing resources in a way that will extend our resources.
Foodbank/Shareshelf
  • Utilizing the Link2Feed software, exercising empathetic and professional care, assist individuals and families to obtain a food hamper.
  • Receive and respond to Foodbank phone calls and voicemails in a professional manner, guided by our Core Values.
  • Maintain high level of confidentiality and privacy while interacting with ‘clients and volunteers.
  • Maintain records for LOOP and Second Harvest donations, inputting weights into databases, respectively.
  • Work with volunteers in a respectful and positive manner, ensuring Foodbank Standards are consistently maintained.
  • Communicate with supervisor, Community Ministries Director, regarding inventory stock and potential purchase orders necessary for continuous operations.
  • Train and empower volunteers to maintain logs for repacking and recalled foods within Foodbank.
  • Maintain proper ‘First In, First Out procedure within Shareshelf program and perishable donations.
  • Monitor Shareshelf donations to glean resources for community kitchen feeding program.
Health & Safety
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by TSA H&S policies and procedures.
  • Report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries, illness, or close calls in a manner required by TSA.
  • Keep work areas clean and hazard free.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
  • Communicate with clients, donors, staff, and volunteers.

  • Reports directly to: Supervisor/CMD

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Normal working hours are 8-3:30 (30 min unpaid lunch) Monday to Friday.
  • Work location is within Community and Family Services Commercial Kitchen and Foodbank.
  • Minimal travel required for the position.
  • The incumbent works in generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:
    • People with challenging behaviours
    • Verbal abuse
  • Required to lift up to 30lbs.
  • The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:
    • Exposure to infectious diseases
    • Possible exposure to illicit drugs and alcohol
    • Sharp objects
    • Moving objects
  • The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to H&S rules):
    • Universal precautions
    • Annual WHMIS training/certificate
    • Food Safe training/certificate
The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Armys Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Food Safe 1 basic required
  • CPR, First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training an asset
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
  • Preference given to those with prior kitchen/restaurant experience.
Skills and Capabilities:
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Excellent customer/donor service ethics including the ability to deal with the public in a friendly, non-judgmental manner.
  • A proven ability to work in a team setting as well as a willingness to take personal initiative and accountability.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to adapt to change and interruptions to a normal work routine and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry)
Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $18.58 with a maximum of $22.29. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
