Your opportunity: We are recruiting for a Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator to provide teaching support services for the undergraduate chemistry laboratories within the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences. Under the general direction of the Technical Operations Manager, the incumbent will contribute to the efficient and successful operations of large enrollment undergraduate laboratory courses by providing technical and administrative support. You will oversee the day-to-day operational needs of the laboratory, act as the first point of contact for general enquiries, and collaborate with course instructors to determine laboratory set-up requirements and ensure the material needs of laboratory exercises are available. The Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator will contribute to the development of new first year laboratory content, as well as, develop and support strategies to improve the overall student experience. This essential role has a direct impact on the laboratory experience of students that both attracts and retains a high-caliber student population. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops, and collaborating with staff and course instructors to determine lab set up requirements.
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs, and following rules and procedural instructions when preparing chemical mixtures and/or solutions.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for general lab enquiries and resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required.
  • Updating and maintaining database records and maintaining course information on student information systems.
  • Creating and editing a standard operating procedures manual and ensuring that procedures and/or guidelines are followed.
  • Ensuring the safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials while operating within close proximity to others.
  • Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment.
  • Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience working in a chemistry focused laboratory setting, preferably in a post-secondary environment.
  • Must be able to operate the following equipment: Balances (both analytical and top-loading types), pH meters, spectrophotometers, hot/stir plates, heatingmantels, fume hoods, melting point analyzers, various types of scientific glassware, pipettes, personal computer, photocopier/printer.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to meet tight-deadlines by effectively prioritizing, multi-tasking and organizing assigned work; despite repeated interruptions.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to details.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have the ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Must have the physical stamina to effectively carry out the duties associated with the position as this position involves a considerable amount of walking and standing on a daily basis and occasional lifting.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills with the ability to provide clear and accurate informationin a diplomatic and tactful manner.
  • Must have first-aid and CPR, WHMIS, chemical spill response, and hazardous waste management training, or be willing to be trained.
  • Experience using social and digital media for marketing or outreach purposes.
  • Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Familiarity with Quercus or other Post-Secondary Course Management Systems.
  • Experience using creative software (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress) for content creation.
