Position Summary
Youth Prenatal and Parenting Program (YP3) provides intensive programming to pregnant and parenting young women utilizing a Care Home model to provide transitional supportive housing to vulnerable young women affected by trauma. The Youth & Family Support Worker is responsible for facilitating the referral and intake process for participants into the YP3 program. The Youth & Family Support Worker applies a harm reduction lens to address the youths needs to promote a healthy pregnancy, develop positive parenting skills, reduce relationship violence and substance use, lowering the risk of harm to mom and babe.
The primary role of the Youth & Family Support Worker is to assess, plan and support youth through the referral process and provide practical support to mom and babe while living in the Care Family Suite through to follow-up and aftercare. The Youth & Family Support Worker supports participants to build strong foundations, develop life skills to live independently and become connected to their community. The Youth & Family Support Worker provides youth with resources that assist them to achieve their individual goals, initiate lifestyle changes and build the confidence to access community resources independently. The Youth & Family Support Worker supports referral and intake into the pre and peri natal groups like Best Babies and Baby Steps. They provide input to the Family Programs Manager for curriculum development and co-facilitates weekly baby groups, providing educational and supportive sessions for pregnant and parenting youth.
The Agency supports practice through a trauma informed lens, placing priority on their personal safety, choice and self-determination while reducing their exposure to harm or risk of harm. The YP3 Program provides care that is normalizing and confidential in accordance with BGC South Vancouver Islands Vision, Mission, Core Values and Policies.
Desired Qualifications
- Degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Education or other Human Services Discipline, or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education
- 1 year pre-natal/perinatal care experience working with high-risk young women and young families (0-5 years of age)
- Excellent communication skills, competent computer /database and file management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Current Basic First Aid certification and infant CPR
- Clean and current drivers license, drivers abstract and reliable vehicle
Additional Consideration Will Be Given To Those Who Have:
- A Class 4 license considered an asset
- Demonstrated experience in delivering activity-based programming
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in a group setting and in 1:1 setting
- Demonstrated crisis counseling skills with vulnerable youth
- Experience in group development & facilitation, for working with youth
- Excellent communication skills, competent computer/database & file management skills
- Experience working in residential settings an asset
- Demonstrated ability to work independently & as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Experience working with youth who are experiencing mental health and/or complex trauma
- ASIST or other suicide intervention training
- Experience in medication management
