Public Art Collections and Conservation Technician

Under the supervision of the Public Art Conservators and Public Art Collections Specialists, you will support the ongoing activation, maintenance and conservation of the Public Art collection. Primary duties include:

  • Execute conservation treatments on artworks in the Public Art Collection, particularly preventive conservation maintenance work on permanently sited sculptures and installations.
  • Support the preparation of artworks for loan by conducting minor conservation treatments, packing artworks, and advising on safe handling and transport.
  • Conduct artwork condition assessments and facility reviews to support exhibitions and loans.
  • Support with collections records management and data-entry as needed.
  • Conduct collections research to support collections management and conservation activities, as required.
  • Assist with the preventive conservation of the Public Art Collection, including the Integrated Pest Management program and collections emergency preparedness.
  • Upkeep health and safety standards and the organization of conservation materials and supplies.
  • Support other conservation and collections care special projects and initiatives.
Qualifications
  • A degree, post-graduate diploma, OR masters degree in Art Conservation and other relevant academic program. Candidates with a degree or diploma in Collections Management with demonstratable credits in Art Conservation will be considered.
  • At least 6 months of practical, hands-on experience in the treatment and handling of artworks. This experience can have been attained through internship/practicum placements during time of study, or through subsequent work experience.
  • A Valid class 5 Drivers License (or provincial equivalent) and the use of personal vehicle is required.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Working at Heights Certification and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification are required and must be completed during first few weeks of employment if not attained previously.
  • First Aid training will be considered an asset.
  • Practical experience working with mixed collections, outdoor sculptures and/or public art is an asset.
  • Experience working with gallery or museum collection management systems is an asset.
  • Strong work ethic and genuine interest in working with outdoor sculpture, as conservation of outdoor sculpture can be physically demanding.
  • Strong conservation writing and documentation skills, with ability to be succinct and expeditious to keep up with summer maintenance workloads. Strong communication skills to promote safe site-work
  • Critical thinking to support conservation decision-making.
Working Conditions: This position will require field work and there will be exposure to chemicals and solvents, occasional working from heights. The incumbent will require personal protective equipment. Pre-employment Requirements
