THE OPPORTUNITY
The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) leads a national movement of individuals, organizations and communities working together to end homelessness in Canada. The CAEH works toward a Canada without homelessness. We do it by helping communities and governments across the country apply proven approaches to transform programs, policies, and systems toward the goal of ending homelessness.

THE ROLE
Reporting to the Communications Lead and operating within a small team of high-performing communications professionals, the Copywriter is responsible for producing persuasive written content to support CAEHs work to end homelessness and the housing crisis. Through their writing they will mobilize the public, strengthen advocacy efforts and amplify the stories of people and communities working to end homelessness in Canada - particularly those with lived experience of homelessness. Their compelling case studies will showcase best practices for preventing and reducing homelessness, which will support efforts in communities across the country.
The ideal candidate has significant experience in copywriting for a range of platforms, advocacy communications, journalism and/or content strategy. The successful applicant will be passionate about bringing their skills to the work of ending homelessness in Canada.
This role supports the mission of ending homelessness by:
· Creating compelling content to build belief that ending homelessness is possible and necessary.
· Helping more people in the sector learn about effective strategies and programs to end homelessness.
· Mobilizing supporters to successfully shift policy and public belief through CAEHs advocacy campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation: Produce web content, social media copy, action emails, media releases and strategic messaging that drive action and build belief that ending homelessness is possible. Highlight the stories and leadership of people with lived experience throughout written content.
Strategic Storytelling: Develop inclusive, equity-focused storytelling strategies and employ narrative frameworks to challenge misconceptions and shift public perception around homelessness.
Knowledge Mobilization: Write compelling case studies that showcase best and promising practices for preventing and reducing homelessness, in order to drive reduction in communities across the country.
Editorial Leadership: Ensure that CAEHs voice is appropriate for different channels and content. Develop guidelines and best practices for storytelling and brand messaging to be utilized across the organization.
Content Collaboration: Support rapid-response communications for emerging issues and policy developments.
Interest-Holder Engagement: In collaboration with other teams, develop engaging content to build and strengthen relationships and partnership with interest-holder organizations and individual supporters.
Other Duties
· In addition, other duties and special projects, as assigned, to advance the mission of reducing homelessness in Canada.
ABOUT YOU
You are a talented copywriter whose flexible, creative and passionate about the power of storytelling to create change. You have a strong sense of narrative frameworks and voice and can use this to align content with an organizations strategic goals. You bring experience crafting content for a range of platforms and media from your time working in non-profits, issue-based advocacy organizations or social and political campaigns. Youre ready to amplify the voices and stories of people working to end homelessness in Canada in an ethical and trauma-informed framework - particularly the stories of those with lived experience of homelessness
Core Qualifications and Competencies
· Bachelors degree or diploma in Journalism, Marketing, Communications or a related field (or equivalent experience).
· 3+ years of experience in copywriting, advocacy communications, journalism or content strategy for non-profits, social justice movements, issue-based advocacy organizations or political campaigns.
· Experience interviewing people and writing stories based on interviews with a focus on ethical, trauma-informed narratives.
· Ability to interpret and craft compelling stories from statistics, qualitative information, and complex research findings.
· Deep understanding of narrative change frameworks such as Public Narrative, and how to use storytelling for movement-building.
· Ability to work independently and produce quality writing under tight deadlines.
· A deep commitment to the mission of reducing homelessness, with a sense of urgency to drive meaningful change through public affairs and development.
· Understanding of diverse populations and challenges, with experience working from a diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-oppression framework.
· Lived experience of homelessness, housing insecurity, or working with affected communities is highly valued.
· Experience with accessibility best practices to ensure all content is inclusive and meets AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) or similar guidelines.
Preferred
· Bilingual (English/French)
· An understanding of how policies, legislation, and local homelessness response systems affect housing outcomes for people experiencing homelessness.
· Experience with media relations and crisis communications
· Hands-on experience with email engagement platforms such as NationBuilder

Work Environment and Travel
· This position can be located anywhere in Canada with preference for a location that is easily accessible to an international airport.
· This position requires the ability to work from a virtual/home office location without the standard support available at a business office.
· Travel up to four times a year to communities and for meetings may be required.
