Job Summary The Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC) at the University of British Columbia provides access for former Indian Residential School (IRS) students, their families and communities to records of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, information based in those records and other sources, for education and public information and supports research and dialogue about IRS history and its legacies. The Centre brings together UBC researchers and educators with community-based experts to address key questions that underline socio-economic development, health and sustainability of Indigenous communities in British Columbia and across the country. The design and development of the IRSHDCs digital infrastructure privileges open, transparent and pluralistic design principles, collaborative development, and incorporation of Indigenous research methodologies. The IRSHDC strives to provide those affected by the Indian Residential School system, collaborators in communities and the academy with platforms designed to support partnership building, aid in improving understanding and contribute to meaningful and effective dialogue. The Communications Manager develops, leads and implements communication and marketing plans, programs and activities to promote the value of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre. Participates in an integrated and coordinated approach to developing communications strategies and policies. Leads the implementation of brand management support and stewardship for the IRSHDC, and focuses on articulating the brand and value of the IRSHDC at UBC, locally, nationally and internationally. Organizational Status Reports to the Executive Director and works collaboratively with the Centre team. Maintains strong working relationships with Centre staff, with campus partners and other campus communicators, and external stakeholders. Work Performed Plans and implements effective communication and marketing plans for the Centre. Drafts strategies and policies to ensure alignment on internal and external communication and marketing guidelines, shares best practices. Works in service to Indigenous communities and peoples of British Columbia and Canada by ensuring engagement and communication activities are trauma informed and foster trust through ongoing, open, and timely communication with internal and external audiences. Consults with Centre staff on audience, delivery and best practices for internal and external communications. Determines the appropriate communication channel and distribution of messages. Generates campaigns, public relations and marketing activities designated at raising the profile of the Centre to faculty, students, researchers, Residential School Survivors and community members. Creates and executes events in support of the Centres strategic vision and objectives. Events may include staff events, dialogue events, workshops, donor events, orientations, exhibitions and campus partnership events. Supports donor and alumni-based activities and events by working with UBC Development as needed. Designs effective and visually appealing communication materials and digital assets, including physical and digital signage, brochures, reports, newsletters, presentations, promotional materials and event-specific materials. Works with external and Indigenous community-based vendors where needed to produce materials. Provides training for new staff where needed on best practices around social media and web content management. Works with the IRSHDC staff to develop annual reports, briefing notes, communiques, speaking notes, press releases, and audio-visual presentations. Develops, analyzes, and shares communication and marketing metrics with the Centre team and others. Creates infographics and other visual aids to amplify data-driven stories and case studies. Responsible for the development and management of multiple communication projects to support the IRSHDCs mission. Works collaboratively with other campus partners and external vendors to produce deliverables. Participates in regular editorial meetings with the IRSHDC team. Liaises with UBC Brand and Communications, Public Affairs, Office of the Provost & VP Academic, the First Nations House of Learning, the Office of Indigenous Strategic Initiatives, and other campus communicators. Cultivates strong relationships with faculty and Indigenous community partners and helps maintain the reputation of the Centre through professionalism and positive contributions in meetings. Acts as a department liaison with campus units, such as Public Affairs, Ceremonies and Events, and Communications and Marketing. Performs other related duties as required. Consequence of Error/Judgement This role exercises initiative and judgement in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion, and must demonstrate tact and discretion. Works independently and as a team member within established guidelines and standards. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of defined goals. Makes decisions regarding writing and editing communication materials, and communications projects and service contracts. Works to serve the communication needs of the Centre and the larger UBC community. Error in the performance of duties or inappropriate disclosure of confidential information may adversely affect the image and reputation of the Centre. The performance of this position can have a major impact on how the Centre is perceived by its internal and, by extension, the external community. Supervision Received Reports to the Executive Director and under the direction of the Academic Director. Supervision Given Manages and coordinates the work of staff and contractors where needed. Explains work procedures to new staff. Directs the work of internal and external service providers as required. Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications Degree in communications, marketing, engagement or public relations preferred. Experience in engagement or communications services or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience developing and implementing communications plans and executing tactics. Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with ones own Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion Ability to plan and implement a broad range of digital and non-digital communication and marketing projects and to effectively deliver results. Demonstrated experience in and understanding of web design and usability best practices, with proven experience in web content development including writing for the web, search engine optimization and digital asset integration. Ability to develop and manage strategic partnerships. Demonstrated ability to lead and work in partnership with Indigenous communities. Capacity for creativity and innovation; ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness and judgement. Demonstrated ability to work in a project-based environment and handle multiple and concurrent priorities. Ability to provide sound communications advice and recommendations to colleagues based on best practices. Experience supervising staff, contractors and providing direction to those assisting with communications projects. Understanding of communications trends and best practices. Verifiable experience with Indigenous organizations and with the issues associated with sensitive records, such as those associated with the residential school experiences required. Experience engaging with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and communities, demonstrated Indigenous cultural competency including knowledge of the Residential School system, and prior work with Survivors of Residential Schools and their families, is preferred.
