As a Transportation Design Engineering Intern, you will be supporting the Transportation department through the preparation of preliminary, functional, and detailed design packages for external road improvements. These deliverables will be required throughout the life-cycle of a project, from the early development application stages, through to construction.

Beyond the detailed design work, you will provide support to other departments through the preparation of pavement marking and signage plans, truck turning analyses, and traffic management plans. This will provide you exposure to project managers and teams around the company.

How you will contribute to the team:

  • Assist in the preparation of preliminary and detailed road designs with the support of design criteria.
  • Prepare proposals for road design projects.
  • Coordinate the submission of comprehensive design packages with the applicable approval authorities (Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, municipality, region, or county).
  • Assist with detailed traffic modelling from a design perspective for a wide variety of residential, commercial and transportation projects.
  • Prepare Traffic Management Plans (TMP’s) to support construction staging of a variety of works.
  • Participate on various project teams to identify issues and mitigative measures to satisfy approval requirements.
  • Develop and utilize knowledge of the design requirements of various approval authorities, such as Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), municipalities, regions, or counties.
  • Obtain materials, data, and information from various sources to prepare reports and advance design efforts.
  • Draft, edit, and finalize technical reports and design briefs to summarize analyses, including document production and circulation.
  • Conduct field reconnaissance, reporting on observations, and client liaison for various project sites to understand existing conditions and ensure successful implementation.
  • Attend and participate in client meetings.
  • Collaborate with other engineering specialties (such as civil and electrical) to gain knowledge of all facets of land development engineering.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in transportation courses.
  • 0 - 2 years of professional experience under your belt.
  • Exposure to Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads, including the corresponding MTO Design Supplement.
  • Exposure to various transportation related standards for other applicable approval authorities.
  • Familiarity with the MTO’s Roadside Design Manual and Highway Corridor Management Manual.
  • Experience with design software, such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Solid communication and technical report writing skills, alongside the ability to prioritize multiple project timelines.
  • Excellent time management skills, project coordination, with the ability to manage several projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to exercise effective judgement when handling changing needs and situations.
  • Motivated to continue to improve existing knowledge base and skillsets.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with clients and colleagues.

Salary range: $68,000 - $75,000
