They are deeply committed to the Catholic faith and are guided by the mission, vision, values, priorities, and strategic plan of the OCSB, along with key initiatives of the Ministry of Education. Under the direction of the School Principal, the Faith Animator and the Superintendent of Leadership and Parent Engagement, the Chaplaincy Leader is called to be a pastoral presence and servant leader within the school. This ministry of presence is foundational to a service of leadership exercised on behalf of the school, school board, and diocese.The Chaplaincy Leader's main areas of responsibility include fostering a vibrant liturgical and prayer life within the school community, providing spiritual accompaniment and faith-building opportunities for staff and students, and promoting social justice through reflection and outreach initiatives. They collaborate with local parishes, diocesan personnel, and school leadership, administer chaplaincy programs, and continue their own faith development while supporting the spiritual growth of others, ensuring that the Catholic identity of the school remains central in all activities. Our Board is creating an eligibility list of qualified candidates for current and future opportunities of Chaplaincy Leader.School locations will be determined at the time of assignment.We currently have an immediate need at various High Schools.
Job DescriptionFosters a vibrant life of prayer and worship as a cornerstone of the Catholic school community.Exercises leadership in prayer including facilitating prayer services for the entire school or public gatherings, animating Eucharistic celebrations in keeping with the liturgical seasons, as well as organizing prayer services and communal responses to grief during times of crisis or bereavementPastoral presence at funerals of students, staff and their immediate family members and ensure hospital/home pastoral care is offered for members of the school community in times of needA resource and support for students and staff on their faith journeyOversees school-based clubs, retreat programs for staff and students and supports social justice groups and projects, offers prayerful faith-building opportunities during staff professional development days and collaborates on the delivery of system-wide initiatives to support the spiritual growth and active engagement of students in community outreachPromote equity for all members of the school communityThe chaplaincy leader is present and visible within the school community, listening to students and staff and affirming their worth, bringing compassion and care to those suffering and fulfilling the needs of the equity policy, and responding to needs as they ariseEnsures pastoral support is made available to students, staff (and families as needed)Maintain relationships with Local Parish(es) and open communication with the Diocese and shares parish information with the school to foster the school-parish triadMaintains communication with other school chaplains to facilitate sharing of information and ideas as well as attending regular monthly chaplaincy meetings and attending parish and diocesan meetings as neededFosters an atmosphere of respect and dialogue where different faiths feel comfortable sharing their perspectives while also maintaining the Catholic identity of the school.Promotes school and school board's improvement plan, spiritual theme, multi-year strategic plan, local diocesan and world-wide initiatives of the Catholic ChurchServes as a spiritual resource and works collaboratively with the school administration to ensure the Catholicity of the school and invites participation in the chaplaincy team and other ministry teams, such as retreat teams, peer ministers, and social justice teamsCollaborates with the Board’s Religious Education and Family Life Department, local clergy, pastoral workers, and diocesan personnel, promoting participation in the life of the local and worldwide Church communityIn consultation with the school principal, Faith Animator and the Coordinator of Religious Education and Family Life Education, they will collaborate in board-wide initiatives that promote both the Catholicity and spiritual well-being of the OCSB communityAdministers chaplaincy programs and resources, and ensures the proper care and use of the school chapelStrives to deepen their theological and pastoral formation through continued professional developmentResponsible for submission of both an Annual Pastoral Plan and an Annual Learning Plan to their school principal, Faith Animator and the Superintendent of Leadership and Parent Engagement.Performing other duties as assigned
Required QualificationsMasters Degree in Pastoral Studies, Religious Education, Theology or equivalent2 years related experience, preferably in an educational settingA background which include pastoral leadership experience in both youth and adult ministryUnderstanding of Catholic practice and knowledge of Church teaching, liturgical norms, canon law and spiritual practicesExcellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skillsCollaborative team player and strong leadership abilitiesProven experience in planning and leading liturgical services, retreats and adult faith opportunitiesDemonstrated capacity for developing and leading social justice and outreach activities, promoting equity and service within the school communityAbility to work in publicly funded, multifaith, and multicultural communities and engage with diverse cultural and faith backgroundsCapacity to adapt to changing circumstances and handle various responsibilities with resilience and flexibilityApplicants must provide proof of qualifications and either a or letter from a Pastor attesting to the candidate’s parish involvement.Applicants must also have membership, or eligible membership in the Catholic School Chaplains of Ontario Association. This role has a full time salary range of $95,098 - $103,153 which would be prorated based on the FTE and duration of the assignment.
