Job Overview
Reporting to the Director, IT, the Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for leading senior systems and networking Information Technology (IT) projects for Haisla Nation Council. This includes serving as a key resource to provide advice and recommendations with respect to all aspects of the organization’s IT infrastructure; day-to-day monitoring and operations of all Haisla Nation Council’s systems, networks, and security infrastructure; observing industry standards and best practices, legislative compliance, organizational values and objectives; and providing IT education and training to personnel of all departments.
The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for the supervision of the Computer and Network Technicians.

Duties & Responsibilities
Perform advanced systems and network duties and functions.
Provide regular as well as ad-hoc IT education and training to all Haisla Nation Council’s staff.
Act as a technical lead for system and network initiatives.
Supervise the Computer Technicians ensuring that all technical tasks are performed efficiently and in accordance with organizational standards.
Develop the overall systems and network architecture design and ensure infrastructure is current.
Assess near and long-term IT capacity needs and perform capacity planning and disaster recovery.
Responsible for the overall systems and networking performance, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimization.
Manage endpoints and cloud services using Microsoft Intune, PowerShell, Windows Autopilot, Azure, Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Defender within a hybrid infrastructure.
Develop, implement, and validate data retention and backup procedures along with disaster recovery plans to prevent data loss and ensure business continuity in alignment with organizational policies.
Automate and streamline routine system administration tasks using scripting and automation to support efficient, scalable deployment of applications, devices, configurations, updates, and security policies.
Document system configurations, processes, and troubleshooting steps for future reference, team collaboration, knowledge base development, and training purposes.
Collaborate with vendors and partners to evaluate, implement, and optimize IT solutions, ensuring professional relationships and effective delivery of services.
Administer user accounts, permissions, access controls, and Group Policy Objects (GPOs) in Active Directory, ensuring data security and adherence to organizational and industry standards.
Support incident response and maintain service availability while isolating and containing issues, analyzing root causes, documenting findings, and restoring systems in alignment with industry standards.
Implement and monitor Servers and Network Attached Storage.
Communicate electronically (and in-person) with HNC users experiencing technical difficulties by troubleshooting and documenting problems.
Evaluate new technologies and provide recommendations and direction on IT solutions.
Communicate with services providers, vendors, and contractors in the resolution of complex issues, quoting and purchasing equipment, and assists the IT Director with the administration of contracts.
Provide technical support to the Haisla Nation Council’s employees regarding computer hardware, software, and network-related issues.
Provide support for issues related to mobile device operating systems, software applications, and security configurations.
Install, configure, and maintain computer hardware and software systems, including operating systems and application software.
Reproduce, diagnose, and resolve hardware and software problems reported by end-users, including troubleshooting issues with printers, scanners, and other peripheral devices.
Follow proper change management processes and post-implementation review of modifications and enhancements.
Set up and maintain computer networks within the Haisla Nation Council, including connecting devices to the Internet and ensuring proper network connectivity.
Proactively identify and troubleshoot network issues such as slow or unstable connections to optimize network connectivity and performance.
Perform routine maintenance and updates, including software installations, patches, and security updates.
Document user needs and create purchase orders for technical components.
Assist in the procurement and inventory management of computer hardware and software.
Maintain record of work performed in ticketing system and escalate issues as needed to other IT Team members or external vendors.
Follow and contribute to the development of policies and standards around user access, security and acceptable use of the Haisla Nation Council network.
Set up and maintain Internet and Intranet web sites and web server hardware and software.
Provide user support for electronic (e-mail) systems and web content management systems.
Other related duties as requested by the Director, Information Technology.
Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems or an IT related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Recognized certifications (e.g., VCP, A+, MCNA, MCP, CCNA, CompTIA, Microsoft Certified: Azure, 365 Administrator Associate – AZ-104) is considered an asset.
5 to 7 years of experience in supporting, maintaining complex systems and network environments and designing complex solutions.
Strong knowledge of Sonicwall, FortiGate, and other next-generation firewalls (NGFW), and VPN appliances, Dell Servers, Laptops, Desktops and Switches, Meraki Wireless Access Points, and Mobile Device Management, Microsoft Surface Tablets/Laptops, M365, Azure cloud technologies and Teams phones, VOIP, telephony, and PowerShell scripting.
Thorough knowledge of network and system administration, with experience managing systems in a complex enterprise network and strong expertise in TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and related network services and protocols.
Working knowledge of Cloud and Network Attached Storage Systems, Synology.
Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization is an asset.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Demonstrated ability to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues logically.
Ability to investigate and resolve operating system, network and related component problems as related to the work performed.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and external contacts.
Strong organizational and time management skills with an attention to detail.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to professionally connect with and influence a diverse group of individuals.
Ability to work non-standard hours to implement changes.
Ability to convey technical details in understandable terms, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work in a busy environment, maintain data confidentiality, and work with limited supervision.
Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
