What youll do
Under the direction of the Manager, Fire Life Safety the Fire Prevention Inspector will perform, but not be limited to, the following duties:
- Conduct fire safety inspections, utilizing the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, Municipal by-laws and other applicable codes and standards;
- Address Fire Code violations and fire safety hazards;
- Comply with all directives issued by the Ontario Fire Marshal;
- Read and interpret building plans, blueprints, installation guides, construction plans and specifications;
- Prepare reports and maintain records detailing information about the property, violations observed and actions to be taken;
- Complete detailed notes, prepare written information and provide assistance with how to rectify situations and contraventions encountered;
- Review and make recommendations for the approval of Fire Safety Plans;
- Review and make recommendations for the approval of alternative compliance solutions pursuant to Division C of the Ontario Fire Code;
- Prepare and present seminars and learning modules on fire prevention and life safety to tenants, staff and other groups;
- Deliver education programs related to fire safety;
- Demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development;
- Perform administrative activities;
- Participate in developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);
- Other duties as assigned.
What youll need
- Post-secondary education in Fire Protection Technology, Law and Security, Justice, Criminology or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required;
- Demonstrated experience in note-taking and the preparation of reports, correspondence and record maintenance;
- Demonstrated experience or expert knowledge of conducting building and property inspections;
- Demonstrated experience or expert knowledge of reading blueprints, installation guides, etc.
- Demonstrated experience or expert knowledge of the installation or maintenance/design of sprinkler, fire alarm and emergency power systems;
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code and Provincial Offences Act, OFM Technical and Public Fire Safety Guidelines and related standards and legislation;
- Demonstrated experience or expert knowledge of delivering public education;
- Must possess strong mechanical aptitude;
- Must possess a valid Ontario Drivers License Class "G" and meet the requirements necessary to receive a City Equipment Operators License;
- Must possess the ability to walk long distances and climb ladders/scaffolding while conducting inspections;
- Requires excellent interpersonal/public relations/teamwork skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills;
- Previous experience in dealing with the public in enforcement situations or experience in construction, architecture or engineering is an asset;
- Further consideration will be given to those candidates that have NFPA 1031, Level 1 and 2 and/or NFPA 1035, Level 1 and 2 from a recognized post-secondary institution prior to the date of application submission;
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills;
- Ability to work well in a team and positively interact within a diverse work environment;
- Strong customer service and interpersonal/interaction skills when dealing with the public, TCHC staff, and other stakeholders;
- Professional engineer licensed by Professional Engineers Ontario, Certified Engineering Technician, Technologist (PEO, CET) is an asset;
- Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) for Fire Protection;
- NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist is an asset;
- Multilingual skills is preferred;
- Previous experience in dealing with the public in enforcement situations or experience in construction, architecture or engineering is an asset.
