We will work with the successful candidate to create a work schedule that meets APSEAs operational needs, while also taking the individuals scheduling preferences into account. For example, the ASL Staff Interpreter may exclusively work morning shifts or exclusively afternoon shifts, they may work on specific days of the week, etc. Please note APSEAs typical hours of operation are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday. Some evening or weekend shifts may be required occasionally.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Supervisor of Accessibility Services, the American Sign Language (ASL) English Staff Interpreter is responsible for providing ASL English Interpretation in response to organizational interpreting needs coordinated by the Staff Interpreting Coordinator. This individual provides interpreting services for meetings and presentations of various sizes across departments and the APSEA organization.
This individual also works collaboratively with Information Technology Services and other APSEA departments to research and promote innovative approaches to interpreting support services through technology such as video conferencing.

Education and Qualifications you Bring:

  • Undergraduate Degree or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a Sign Language interpreter training program is required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of work experience with ASL English interpreting.
  • Experience working within a virtual environment is an asset.
  • Preferred professional certifications from the following are desirable: CASLI – Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters, RID – Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Canadian Government Translation Bureau, Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), and/or other Interpreter Screenings.
  • Flexible hours are required in order to support various assignments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to adequately prepare for assignments to ensure the highest quality of services
  • This position will be exposed to a high level of sensitive information on a day-to-day basis and therefore it is a requirement to adhere to a recognized Sign Language Interpreter Professional Code of Ethics (for example, CASLI Professional Code of Ethics, RID Code of Ethics)
  • Culturally responsive with the ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of cross-cultural understanding, human rights and diversity.
  • Some travel is expected, throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, so requires access to a reliable mode of transportation.
