The Data Science Internship Program is a 24-month paid internship program designed to connect data scientists to opportunities in policy and government. Hone your data skills while receiving mentorship and training in different government departments as part of two 10-month rotations following an initial 4-month placement with the Data Science Program. This unique opportunity places you at the intersection of science and policy, allowing you to put your data science skills to use to positively impact the lives of Manitobans. What we offer:

Qualifications: Essential:

  • Graduate-level training in statistics, computer science, physics, mathematics, social sciences or related discipline (masters degree or higher); an equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.
  • Advanced experience using statistical software and programming languages, such as R or Python with proper software development practice (e.g., version control, automated testing).
  • Experience working with large, complex and non-traditional (audio, video, images, free text) datasets that require significant cleaning and management.
  • Knowledge of or experience with traditional machine learning (e.g., XGBoost), mathematical optimization, and/or contemporary machine learning (e.g., neural networks).
  • Experience applying traditional/frequentist statistical methods and/or experimental design.
  • Strong verbal communication skills including the ability to tell compelling stories and build consensus around analytical findings.
  • Strong written communication skills including the ability to develop/describe custom visualizations from code.
  • Ability to lead and work collaboratively in a team setting to complete complex projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to render technical decisions and recommendations.
Desired:
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in French

Duties: As a Data Science Intern, you will complete an initial 4 month placement with the Data Science Program where you will work with senior scientific staff to hone your skills through hands-on training, become familiar with best analytical practice for Manitoba, and work on advanced data analytics projects. There will be two (2) subsequent 10 month rotations with host departments where you will apply your technical skills to solve high-priority issues in diverse areas spanning the full range of government policy and operations. You will retain your connection to the Data Science Program as the main hub of analytical practice in government, returning once per week to continue to receive mentorship and support. As a Data Science Intern, you will also receive access to diverse training opportunities in skills and technologies that are sought-after by both the public and private sectors. The Data Science Internship program will give you the breath of experience needed to succeed in a career in the public service and beyond.
