Position Purpose

Reporting to the Data & Evaluation Manager, the Data & Evaluation Assistant supports the evaluation efforts happening at the Ottawa Mission, through the creation, maintenance, and improvement of data and metrics. They will provide expertise on data collection processes, data analysis, data quality, and data infrastructure to support Mission programs and data-informed decision-making.

Major Responsibilities

  • Oversees organization-wide data infrastructure and databases, including conducting data quality checks, improving data collection workflows and systems, and training staff on data entry practices
  • Develops mechanisms, tools and data infrastructure to improve data collection, tracking, and data sharing within the organization
  • Compiles and analyzes data for reporting obligations and as requested
  • Works with imperfect data, identifies issues, cleans data, makes assumptions and determines confidence levels
  • Interprets data in context and develops plain language interpretations and recommendations that will inform organizational decision-making and strategic planning
  • Collaborates and consults with staff, stakeholders, and clients to understand context and determine practical solutions to organizational data needs
  • Supports the implementation of evaluation frameworks and outcome measurement for programs
  • Assists with survey development, data collection, analysis and reporting as needed
  • Assists in sharing evaluation findings using data reports, dashboards, visualizations, and presentations for programs, departments, and senior leadership teams
  • Maintains detailed documentation of processes used and decisions made for data extraction, cleaning, analysis, and interpretation
  • Ensures data practices follows ethical research practices, existing government legislations for data governance, and standards set by the organization
  • Ensures data and evaluation activities are carried out to high efficiency and quality

Other Requirements

Education

  • University Degree in social sciences, statistics, sciences or a related field
  • University or College level training in data management, data science, statistics, or quantitative research

Experience

  • 2 years’ relevant work experience in a data and/or program evaluation-related position
  • 1 year of experience with data collection processes, data cleaning, data analysis, and database management
  • Program evaluation and/or research experience considered an asset
  • Experience working in a non-profit, social services environment considered an asset

Qualifications

  • Strong skills in quantitative data analysis
  • Knowledge of database processes and quality data
  • Skills in qualitative data analysis an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong skills in critical thinking and decision making
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Proficient in statistical software use (e.g. SPSS, R )
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills
  • Able to work independently
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Good understanding of homelessness, poverty, mental health and addiction
  • Strong work ethics, good moral judgement
  • Bilingualism (French/English) considered an asset

Working Conditions

  • This is an in person position in an office setting within a Homeless Shelter
  • Standard office hours; occasional non-regular hours and days may be required
  • Must adhere to strict deadlines and be able to manage and respond to competing priorities
  • Must be comfortable working in a challenging environment that has the potential for confrontation and/or exposure to violence
