Provides technical support and expertise to those involved in the procurement, inspections, diagnoses, repairs, maintenance, overhaul, rebuilding, designing, improving and supporting of all operating systems associated with their specific area; ensuring requirements and standards are met; conducts operational tests, quality inspections, technical problem solving, equipment performance reviews, quality assurance activities, work method development and database administration; creates, revises and administers technical documentation; works at other sites, both indoors and outdoors and is in involved in training initiatives.
The incumbent may be required to work at various carhouse locations within the Streetcar Maintenance Department, based on operational needs.
Key Job Functions
- Conducting technical problem-solving, complex diagnostics, subsystem, vehicle and fleet performance review, equipment testing, quality assurance activities, procedural development, training and testing, and specification development relevant to the assigned rail vehicles.
- Assessing complex electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic and HVAC equipment installed on various vehicles and associated support equipment.
- Creating, revising and administering technical documentation related to vehicle systems and subsystems.
- Performing data analysis and quality assurance activities related to determine the effectiveness of inspection, repair and overhaul processes.
- Responsible for streetcar and equipment improvement or modification.
- Reverse engineer components and source alternate suppliers.
- Update and manage vehicle database systems, which include but not limited to, passenger information system.
- Perform post incident vehicle inspections and collect pertinent information for engineering investigation.
- Assist in the design of solutions and creating detail and assembly drawings for manufacture.
- Providing technical support such as fault diagnosis, project supervision and technical training.
- Recommending and implementing improvements to equipment and/or methods of work.
- Perform a variety of administrative and supervisory duties as required (e.g. planning, organizing, assigning tasks, scheduling, etc.)
- The work may be performed in a shop, garage, carhouse, or office environment; indoors and outdoors. Additionally, the incumbent may be dispatched to other work sites in order to investigate problems and incidents.

- Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in Electrical /Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
- Register/ eligible to register as P.Eng. with PEO or OACETT certification as an Engineering Technologist considered an asset.
- Solidworks CAD Experience is considered as an asset.
- Experienced in working on rail vehicles maintenance would be an asset.
- Knowledge in electrical power and control systems, AC/DC motors, microprocessor-based controls and general mechanical systems.
- Knowledge and experience with PLC programming and software (i.e., IEC 61131-3) and troubleshooting is an asset.
- Knowledge and experience with communications networks (Ethernet and wireless) is also considered an asset.
- Proficient in the use of computers and applications, including MS Office, SolidWorks, AutoCAD and/or DraftSight, and familiarity with, or able to quickly learn, the data and methodologies of the Material Management System (IFS) and rail vehicle work order systems such as the Streetcar/Subway/SRT Maintenance System (SMS).
- Good knowledge of engineering design and costing principles, methods and procedures developed through several years of directly related work-experience.
- Specific knowledge required, with demonstrated ability, to diagnose and correct faults relating to electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems/components utilized on streetcar and associated maintenance equipment.
- Experience, with demonstrated ability, in directing and training staff and union personnel on various aspects of work, such as fault isolation techniques, equipment modifications (SWIS), project activity and correct procedure performance.
- Experience in developing and delivering effective and engaging in-house technical training programs.
- Excellent technical writing skills to prepare technical documents including maintenance, test/failure, exchange and standard operating procedures, and bulletins.
- Effective organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with supervisory, technical and trades personnel in the carhouses, shops and engineering groups regarding various vehicle maintenance issues, and with representatives of external supply organizations regarding vehicle specifications, modifications and equipment problems.
- Sound judgment that is supported by strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- A valid Province of Ontario class “G” driver’s license.
- Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
- The successful candidate may be required to attend and successfully complete TTC in-house programs related to the work.
