Astek is currently seeking a Computational Biologist for one of its clients, based in Canada.

The position is fully remote (100% work-from-home). The candidate must work according to the Toronto time zone (EST) to ensure effective collaboration with the team

Responsabilities :

In this role, you will help refine how quantify and validate cellular states. This role is part of a high‑impact project focused on benchmarking functional scoring methods and improving the interpretability of high‑dimensional transcriptomic data.

Your contributions will directly enhance the ability to distinguish true biological signals from technical noise in large‑scale single‑cell atlases.

• Systematically evaluate and compare computational approaches for quantifying phenotype activation across single‑cell transcriptomes.
• Establish rigorous statistical baselines and “negative control” frameworks to improve the reliability of automated cell‑state classification.
• Develop new computational methods as needed to address limitations of current analytical approaches.
• Implement methodologies to distinguish genuine biological signatures from stochastic noise.
• Summarize and present findings during internal peer‑review sessions; contribute to conference submissions or scientific manuscripts when applicable.

Profile :

• Extensive hands‑on experience with single‑cell analysis using Scanpy, AnnData, and Pandas.
• Proficiency implementing statistical and machine learning models using scikit‑learn and SciPy.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and commitment to reproducible research.
• Enthusiasm for drug discovery and ability to thrive in dynamic research environments.
• Strong communication skills, capable of articulating complex computational challenges to scientific peers.
• Master’s degree and currently pursuing or recently completed a PhD in Computational Biology, Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.

Additional Valuable Experience

• Knowledge of cell biology and/or immunology.
• Experience in hypothesis testing, noise modeling, and benchmarking computational tools.
• Familiarity with Explainable AI (XAI) or large‑scale biological datasets.
• Proven ability to build or extend innovative bioinformatics pipelines.

Responsabilités :

Dans ce rôle, vous contribuerez à affiner la manière dont nous quantifions et validons les états cellulaires. Ce poste s’inscrit dans un projet à fort impact visant à comparer des méthodes de scoring fonctionnel et à améliorer l’interprétabilité de données transcriptomiques à haute dimension.

Votre travail permettra directement d’améliorer la capacité à distinguer les véritables signaux biologiques du bruit technique dans des atlas unicellulaires à grande échelle.

• Évaluer et comparer de manière systématique les approches computationnelles permettant de quantifier l’activation de phénotypes à partir de transcriptomes single‑cell.
• Établir des bases statistiques rigoureuses et des cadres de contrôles négatifs afin d’améliorer la fiabilité de la classification automatisée des états cellulaires.
• Développer de nouvelles méthodes computationnelles au besoin pour pallier les limites des approches analytiques existantes.
• Mettre en œuvre des méthodologies permettant de distinguer les signatures biologiques authentiques du bruit stochastique.
• Résumer et présenter les résultats lors de séances d’examen interne par les pairs ; contribuer à des soumissions en conférence ou à des manuscrits scientifiques, lorsque pertinent.

Profile :

• Solide expérience pratique en analyse single‑cell utilisant Scanpy, AnnData et Pandas.
• Maîtrise de l’implémentation de modèles statistiques et de machine learning avec scikit‑learn et SciPy.
• Excellentes compétences organisationnelles, souci du détail et engagement envers la recherche reproductible.
• Intérêt marqué pour la découverte de médicaments et capacité à évoluer dans des environnements de recherche dynamiques.
• Excellentes aptitudes en communication, capable d’expliquer des défis computationnels complexes à des pairs scientifiques.
• Diplôme de maîtrise et doctorat en cours ou récemment complété en biologie computationnelle, informatique, apprentissage automatique ou domaine connexe.

Atouts supplémentaires :

• Connaissances en biologie cellulaire et/ou immunologie.
• Expérience en tests d’hypothèses, modélisation du bruit et benchmarking d’outils computationnels.
• Familiarité avec l’IA explicable (XAI) ou les grands jeux de données biologiques.
• Capacité démontrée à construire ou étendre des pipelines bioinformatiques innovants.
