Duties

The Parliamentary Protective Service (PPS) is responsible for physical security within the Parliamentary Precinct and on the grounds of Parliament Hill. The PPS protects members of Parliament and Senators, employees, and visitors in the Parliamentary Precinct; keeps the peace; maintains order; enforces respect for Parliamentary rules and procedures; and promotes security and safety measures in all buildings within the Parliamentary Precinct.

The Detection Specialist (DS) performs the vital role of identifying questionable, prohibited and restricted items through detection and reporting during the scanning process in designated buildings, predominantly where members of Parliament and Senators conduct their business and with visitors seeking access to the Parliament buildings. The DS receive and directs visitors through the screening process and is part of an integrated protective posture that controls access including scanning of all vehicles accessing Parliament Hill.

Work environment

The PPS is a separate and distinct organization and is not subject to the Public Service Employment Act. The PPS has its own classification, compensation system and staffing regime. Persons appointed to the PPS continue to be part of the federal government and will receive the public service pension plan and public service insurance benefits plan.

DEFINITIONS:
  • Recent is defined as within the last five (5) years.
**Significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of complex activities related to this position, which are acquired on a full-time basis over a period of two (2) years. ASSETS:
Post-secondary education in the security or law enforcement field.

Degree equivalency

A1 - Automated External Defibrillation (AED) certification or training.

A2 - Work experience in the detection field and/or in the use of detection devices.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
There is a physical effort in the job that requires you to stand and walk continuously while on duty.

You must be available and willing to work various shift schedules (day and night) including weekends and statutory holidays, 365 days a year.

You must be available and willing to work overtime on short notice.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - All candidates must be eligible to obtain both a Site Access Clearance, and Enhanced Reliability Status (ERS)*with Secret/Top Secret clearance when required*. The process involves a background investigation that includes: a loyalty assessment, law enforcement verifications, credit and financial verifications as well as a security interview wherein questions may include (but not limited to), previous employment, online activities, financial situation, alcohol and/or drug use. Your personal references as well as previous employers will also be contacted as part of the security screening process. You must also consent to completing a personal history questionnaire, be fingerprinted and photographed.
