About the Library Systems Department

The Library Systems Department is dedicated to maintaining and advancing our technological infrastructure. This includes managing hardware services such as scanning and printing, overseeing the librarys primary website, and supporting our unique archives and special collections. We manage a portfolio of websites that showcase our librarys diverse and extensive collections, both physical and digital, and our many services. Our team is committed to providing top-notch services and resources, facilitating an environment conducive to learning, research, and discovery.

Purpose

Works under the general supervision of the Systems Librarian as part of the VUL Systems Department. Works with the Systems Administration team and in developing and maintaining the Library’s equipment and data infra-structure, including server, database, and application configurations, as well as inventory and monitoring services.

Special focuses for the Systems Technician:
  • the support and development of staff workstations and other end-user devices, including automation of operating system and application deployment.
  • individual technical support and instruction for staff, including those working remotely
  • support for public users of the library’s computing equipment, and back-up and leadership for student staff. The job includes some work at the IT Help desk.
Additional responsibilities and project duties may be assigned as required.

DUTIES

Workstation and Server Operations
  • Assists in the day to day maintenance of the Library’s physical and virtualized Linux and Windows servers; works with the Systems administration team in development and expansion of server systems.
  • Takes a leadership role in the operational deployment of workstations and other end-user equipment; contributes to the development of efficient methods and routines for operating system and application deployment.
  • Works with other Systems staff to install and maintain database services such as web and digitization services, payment and record keeping systems.
  • Assists in implementing the Library’s hardware infrastructure, including server and storage racking, cabling and installation, in support of staff and public networks.
  • Assists the Systems team in managing the library’s networked environment, including Active Directory, file services, DHCP, DNS, and third-party deployment and management tools.
  • Assists with the development and testing of the librarys backup and disaster recovery systems.
  • Assists in the implementation and enforcement of the Library’s network security policies, including password policy, patching, encryption, firewalls, anti-malware products and other measures.
  • Helps maintain the documentation system and documents the procedures and settings required for maintenance and recovery of systems for which she or he is responsible.
IT Help Team Duties
  • The Systems Department supports a wide variety of equipment and dozens of software applications. The work of the help team includes providing direct guidance to staff and library users and troubleshooting problems for staff working from home or on site, and for public workstations on site, including peripheral devices and network equipment. We also provide basic support for user-owned mobile devices such as laptops and tablets, and we produce end-user guides in print and electronic form. The Systems Technician provides training, guidance and backup support to student IT Help service staff.
Other Duties
  • In some cases, the Systems Technician provides technical support for faculty or other non-library staff, such as troubleshooting, setup and maintenance of computing equipment, or assisting them in the use of technology. Other duties may include, but are not limited to, making small purchases of hardware and software, doing needs assessments, or preparing equipment for re-sale or decommissioning.
Professional Development
  • Independently keeps current with technical literature; may attend relevant conferences or workshops, and participates in relevant university groups. Maintains knowledge of emerging technologies and their relevance to the Library.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  • The applicant must have an undergraduate degree in computer science or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
  • Two years of work experience in technical support, including support of a wide variety of equipment and services in at least a mid-sized networked environment
  • Must include experience with Windows network administration and security, software deployment over the network, customer service and support, and troubleshooting
  • Should have gained familiarity with common programming/scripting languages, operating systems, software tools and standards that academic libraries work with, such as anti-malware utilities, Apache, Linux, Windows Workstation and Server, MySQL, ILS software, HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, TCP/IP, MARC, Dublin Core
  • A practical knowledge of web development is a decided asset, as is familiarity with common operating systems including Microsoft, Apple, Google and Linux systems.
Other:
  • Manual Skill - Dexterity is required in handling and integrating electrostatic sensitive devices. The job occasionally involves bending, stooping, and lifting objects over 20 kg.
  • Communications and Problem-solving Skills – This position is very team-oriented and requires excellent communication skills. The level of responsibility involved also demands the ability to work independently and a strong client service orientation. The incumbent must also possess excellent computer troubleshooting abilities, good judgment about the likely consequences of their actions, and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Coding Skills - scripting, programming in machine-oriented and object oriented languages, systems programming, software design, markup languages, and database structures. The candidate should possess the willingness and ability to learn new technology skills both in formal and informal learning contexts.
