Job Description
About the Role The Opinion department is seeking an editor for a part-time role commissioning and editing essays by guest contributors, staff writers, columns and newsletters. This is a critical position as Opinion deepens its political and cultural coverage in a busy presidential election season. We expect the editor to find new voices across the ideological spectrum, generate original and surprising ideas, work with Opinion writers, and to see pieces through from conception to publication. We’re looking for a creative and accomplished editor — someone with a wealth of curiosity and thoughtful editorial judgment who can work on essays in response to breaking news and on longer-form pieces. You will work with both professional writers and non-writers to help them make their case to the world. This editor must be a team player, able to collaborate with other writers, editors and our audience team to find new audiences and ways to get readers to deepen their engagement with our work. This editor will work with Opinion’s senior editors, including our award-winning graphics, video and audio teams, to develop storytelling that’s urgent, heart-tugging and accessible. This is a guild position. Responsibilities:
  • Commission and edit smart essays by staff writers, contributing writers and outside experts, policymakers and others, that advance debate and react to news with fresh angles.
  • Develop a network of outside writers, including the cultivation of new voices, for the biggest news events and ideas.
  • Collaborate with other editors in realizing the department’s vision and priorities.
  • You will occasionally develop, pitch and help accomplish high-impact enterprise pieces; including collaboration with multimedia teams, including design, photo, graphics, audio and video on how to best tell these stories.
  • Fact check your articles and see them through the production process, including the writing and editing of display copy.
  • Use social media, reader call-outs, reporting or other creative means to reach readers with different experiences.
  • Coordinate with the audience team to maximize the reach and influence of the work.
  • Read, review and promptly respond to unsolicited submissions.
  • Help to assess and calibrate Opinion’s overall coverage, considering news value; the range and diversity of writers; and the tension between productivity versus impact and influence.
Basic Qualifications:
  • At least 3 years of editing experience.
  • Fluency in the big ideas driving conversation in politics and culture.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience commissioning pieces and working with writers to develop ideas.
  • Familiarity with a wide-range of public thinkers and experienced writers.
The rate of base pay for this role is between $61.38 and $61.38 per hour. Please include links to a few of your published pieces in your cover letter.
