ATCO Gas has an exciting employment opportunity for an Accounting Co-op Student to join our Edmonton office for a four- month co-op term. This role provides the unique opportunity of gaining valuable accounting work experience in industry. We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated, and technology adept Co-op Student to join our team.

The successful Accounting Co-op Student will join the ATCO Gas Regulatory team in Edmonton. Here, they will serve the regulatory needs of ATCO’s natural gas distribution utility by collecting, analyzing and preparing information that will be used in the compilation of regulatory filings with the Alberta Utilities Commission.

Who you are:

  • Enrolled in an accounting co-op program at a recognized Canadian University.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment, strong attention to detail, exercising discretion, judgment, diplomacy, and confidentiality
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills that enable you to present identified problems and facilitate problem resolution
  • Strong problem-solving, creative thinking, and analytical skills
  • Particularly good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • In progress for a bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Ability to produce results with accuracy and quality
  • Work well under pressure in a rapidly changing environment

What you get to do:

The Accounting Co-op Student will explore the benefits of an industry-based CPA designation. The Co-op Student will also receive focused support and mentorship throughout the duration of their work term.

Responsibilities:

The successful Accounting Co-op Student will primarily assist in performing a Lead Lag Study to determine the lag between billing and payment dates of revenues and expenses. A sample of responsibilities during the co-op term could include the following:

  • Tracking:
    • retailer billings by cycle, read dates, billing dates and payment dates
  • Tallying and summarizing:
    • various payroll components (earnings, deductions and taxes)
  • Calculating:
    • Lag Days
    • Net Lag Pay
  • Work with various internal teams to obtain data relating to:
    • Revenues
    • Payroll
    • Insurance
    • Intercompany O&M transactions
    • O&M transactions
