SAITs Community Conduct department works with students, faculty and staff in managing and addressing student academic and non-academic conduct issues.
The Opportunity

The Associate Director leads the Office of Community Conduct, is responsible for the daily operation of this department, and works with a broad range of institutional stakeholders to address student misconduct.

The Associate Director also develops, participates in and/or leads initiatives that support and enhance SAIT’s culture of student academic integrity. The Role
    • Team Management - 20%
    • Integrates a vision, strategy and implementation plan for area in alignment with SAIT’s 5-year strategic plan.
    • Provides leadership and direction to team that encourages and supports responsive communication, respect and teamwork.
    • Manages and supports employees through the employment lifecycle (hiring, training, mentoring, performance development and offboarding).
    • Intentional Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) focused decision-making.
    • Demonstrates excellent employee leadership, while focusing on skill development and opportunities for advancement.

    • Provides support to and acts as a resource for academic managers, instructors and other employees dealing with student academic misconduct - 25%
    • Providing advice and/or direction on difficult or complex procedural issues.
    • Drafting and/or editing decision letters, as needed.
    • Providing training and coaching to employees on either an individual or a group basis.

    • Addresses student non-academic misconduct situations - 25%
    • Hears and adjudicates non-academic misconduct cases, following investigation by the Student Conduct Coordinator.
    • Liaises with the Office of the Registrar on student appeals of non-academic conduct decisions.
    • Works with a broad range of departments and individuals, such as the Behavioral Intervention Team, Student Development and Counselling, Security and Emergency Services, Accessibility Services, and the Sexual Violence Program Coordinator and Educator, to manage student non-academic misconduct.

    • Develops, participates in, champions and/or leads academic integrity initiatives both within SAIT and with external organizations

    • Develops, maintains and implements SAIT-wide student academic and non-academic conduct policies, procedures and processes - 10%
    • Developing and maintaining standard templates for hearing notices, decision letters, etc.
    • Identifying and recommending revisions to SAIT’s student conduct procedures.
    • Managing the OCC’s recordkeeping processes.
    • Maintaining and tracking student misconduct statistics on a program, school and institutional level, and identifying and responding to trends.

    • Upholds and promotes administrative law requirements of procedural fairness - 10%
    • Working with the Ombudsperson and academic managers to identify and address potential or actual breaches of procedural fairness.
    • Ensuring academic and non-academic misconduct procedures, processes and documents meet procedural fairness requirements.
    • Developing and delivering workshops, presentations etc., either individually or in collaboration with other employees, to the SAIT community on administrative law and procedural fairness requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
    • Minimum
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution in student development, higher education, or other related field of study.
    • 5 years’ experience in a post-secondary environment with a diverse student community. Equivalent experience in the public sector may also be considered.
    • A demonstrated understanding of administrative law requirements of procedural fairness and experience applying those requirements in a work-related setting.

    • Preferred
    • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution.
    • Experience adjudicating and resolving student conduct cases in a post-secondary environment.
    • Experience developing and delivering educational programs, workshops etc. to employees.
    • Knowledge of current trends and issues in the student academic and non-academic conduct fields.
